They look similar, they both have buttons, and they protect against completely unrelated hazards. Confusing them leads people to install the wrong device or, worse, to remove the right one because it kept tripping.
GFCI: protects people from shock
A ground fault circuit interrupter compares current going out on the hot with current returning on the neutral. If more than a few milliamps go missing, that current is finding another path to ground — possibly through a person — and the device opens in a fraction of a second.
It is a life-safety device. It does not care about the size of the load; it cares about imbalance. That is why it belongs anywhere water and electricity coexist.
Where GFCI protection is required in homes
- Bathrooms, and any receptacle within reach of a sink
- Kitchens, including countertop and island receptacles
- Laundry areas, garages and unfinished basements
- Outdoors and in crawlspaces
- Near pools, spas and hot tubs
- Certain hardwired appliance circuits under current code cycles
AFCI: protects the building from fire
An arc fault circuit interrupter watches the current waveform for the electrical signature of arcing — the erratic, high-frequency pattern produced by a loose connection, a nail through a cable, a pinched wire behind a staple, or a damaged cord. Arcing generates intense localized heat without necessarily drawing enough current to trip a standard breaker. That is the gap AFCI closes.
Where AFCI protection is required
Broadly, most 15 and 20 amp branch circuits in living areas of new residential construction: bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, kitchens, laundry areas and similar. Requirements have expanded across code cycles, so what applies to your project depends on the version your jurisdiction has adopted.
Dual function devices
Combination AFCI/GFCI breakers and receptacles provide both. They are the usual answer for a kitchen or laundry circuit that needs each type of protection, and they save a panel slot.
Why they nuisance trip
Both types are frequently blamed for tripping "for no reason." Real causes:
- Shared neutrals. Multi-wire branch circuits wired without the neutral properly associated will trip GFCI devices reliably.
- Moisture. Outdoor and garage receptacles get damp; damp means leakage.
- Motor and electronic loads. Some vacuums, treadmills and older appliances leak enough to trip a sensitive device.
- Genuine faults. Sometimes the device is right and there is a real problem. This possibility deserves testing before anything gets swapped.
- Age. GFCI devices have a service life. A fifteen-year-old one that trips randomly may simply be finished.
How to test them
Press TEST monthly. The device should trip. Press RESET; it should restore. If a GFCI does not trip when tested, it is not protecting anyone and needs replacing. If it will not reset, there is either a live fault or the device has failed. AFCI breakers test the same way at the panel.
What not to do
Do not replace a repeatedly tripping AFCI or GFCI with a standard breaker to make the tripping stop. That removes the protection while leaving the fault in place, and the fault is what the device was telling you about.
