Electrical questions, answered
Twenty of the questions we are asked most often, answered the way we would answer them on the phone.
Do you charge for a quote?
For scheduled work we give you a flat price after looking at the job, and you approve it before anything starts. Diagnostic visits for faults that need tracing have a service price that is quoted to you on the phone before we dispatch.
Are your prices flat or hourly?
Flat. You get one number for the whole job before work begins, so there is no meter running while we diagnose or while you decide.
Do you really answer the phone at 3am?
Yes. The number on this site rings to a live dispatcher 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. Urgent calls are dispatched immediately rather than added to a callback list.
How fast can someone get to me?
Same-day is normal for most California cities we serve, and emergency calls are prioritized. When you call, the dispatcher will give you a realistic window rather than an optimistic one.
What areas do you cover?
All California cities on our locations page, with crews working across the Bay Area, Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, San Diego County, the Central Valley, the Sacramento region and the Central Coast.
Do you handle commercial work?
Yes — offices, restaurants, retail, warehouses and light industrial. Most commercial work is scheduled for nights or weekends so the business stays open.
Do you pull permits?
For work that requires it: panel and service upgrades, EV charger circuits, new circuits, rewires and generator installations. The permit cost is stated in your quote.
What payment methods do you take?
Major cards, bank transfer and check. Payment is due on completion unless the job is a larger project with an agreed schedule.
Will you tell me if I do not need the work?
Yes, and it happens regularly. A panel that looks alarming is sometimes fine, and a problem that sounds expensive is sometimes a ten-dollar device. We would rather tell you that than sell you a project.
Can you work with my contractor or remodeler?
Often. We coordinate rough-in and trim timing with general contractors, kitchen and bath remodelers and solar installers routinely.
How do I know what size electrical service I have?
Look at the main breaker in your panel — the number stamped on its handle is your service size in amps. Common figures are 60, 100, 125, 150 and 200.
My breaker trips when I use two appliances at once. Is that dangerous?
That is usually a genuine overload rather than a fault, and the breaker is protecting the wiring. The correct fix is a dedicated circuit for the larger appliance, never a bigger breaker on the same wire.
Can you add an EV charger to a 100 amp panel?
Sometimes, using a lower charger setting or a load-sharing device. Often a service upgrade is needed instead. A load calculation gives a definite answer before you spend anything.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most residential upgrades are a single day, with power off for several hours while the utility disconnects and reconnects. That window is arranged with you in advance.
Do you fix work that another electrician did badly?
Yes, and we will tell you plainly what we find. Corrective work is quoted the same way as anything else.
Why do my LED lights flicker on the dimmer?
Nearly always a dimmer and LED driver mismatch, or a dimmer whose minimum load is higher than the fixtures draw. Swapping to a compatible dimmer resolves the large majority of cases.
Is a burning smell always an emergency?
Treat it as one. A hot-plastic smell with no obvious source usually means a connection overheating inside a wall or box, and it will not fix itself. Turn off the circuit if you can do so safely and call.
Do you install equipment I bought myself?
Usually yes, provided it is a listed product suitable for the application. We will tell you before scheduling if something you bought is not going to work.
Do you offer maintenance agreements for businesses?
Yes. Scheduled visits with thermal scanning of panels, device and lighting checks and a written punch list, timed around your trading hours.
What should I do before an electrician arrives?
Clear access to the panel, note exactly what happened and what was running, secure pets, and leave any tripped circuits off. That alone shortens most diagnostic visits.
