Two kinds of legacy wiring generate most of the questions we get about older California homes. They are different vintages with different problems, and they get confused constantly.
Knob and tube (roughly pre-1950)
Individual conductors run through ceramic knobs on framing and ceramic tubes where they pass through wood. There is no ground conductor. The insulation is rubber and cloth, which becomes brittle with age and heat.
What it actually risks
- No ground. Two-prong outlets throughout, so nothing modern has a fault path.
- Brittle insulation. Decades of heat, especially near fixtures, leaves conductors that crack when disturbed.
- Buried in insulation. Knob and tube was designed to dissipate heat in open air. Blown-in attic insulation over it defeats that.
- Improvised extensions. The real hazard is usually not the original work, which was often good, but seventy years of splices added to it.
How to identify it
Look in the attic or basement for single wires supported by white ceramic knobs. Supporting evidence: two-prong outlets, a fuse box, push-button light switches, cloth-covered cable at fixtures.
Aluminum branch wiring (roughly 1965 to 1975)
During a copper price spike, solid aluminum was used for standard 15 and 20 amp branch circuits. The metal itself is not the issue. Its behavior at terminations is.
What it actually risks
Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with heat cycling, oxidizes into a poorly conductive layer, and creeps under screw pressure. Over decades, connections loosen, resistance rises, connections get hotter, and the cycle accelerates. Failures happen at outlets, switches and splices — not in the middle of a run.
How to identify it
Look at cable jackets in the panel or attic for "AL" or "ALUMINUM" printed on the sheath, and at conductors for a dull silver color rather than copper. Note that large aluminum feeders for a service or a range circuit are normal and not the same concern.
Your realistic options
| Full rewire | New copper branch circuits throughout with grounded devices. Definitive, most disruptive, and the only option that resolves everything at once. |

| Aluminum remediation | Every termination pigtailed to copper with connectors specifically listed for the purpose. Far cheaper than rewiring and widely accepted. |
| Targeted repair | Removing dangerous splices, clearing insulation off knob and tube, adding grounded circuits where they matter most. A stopgap, not a solution. |
The insurance question
Some carriers decline or surcharge homes with knob and tube or unremediated aluminum branch wiring, and some ask for an electrician's report. If you are being asked for documentation, an inspection that maps what wiring types are actually present — most older homes are a mix — is usually the cheapest path forward.
What not to do
Do not replace two-prong outlets with three-prong ones on an ungrounded circuit. It puts a grounding pin in front of appliances that have no ground behind it. A GFCI device is the legitimate interim measure, and it must be labeled as having no equipment ground.
